Race results

Kemper Chicago Open 10K - Chicago, IL - August 4, 2002

Scott Segal, Tom Arneson, and Farrell Malone made the trip to Chicago for the Chicago 10K. Despite the seemingly cooler temps, the race turned out to be unbearably hot, at least according to Farrell. This didn't deter Tom from running negative splits in the last couple miles to lead the group to the finish. Congratulate Tom for "just trying to break 42 minutes." Yeah.

Tom Arneson: 39:54
Farrell Malone: 43:35
Scott Segal: 44:55 (port-o-let adjusted)

Depot to Depot 5 Miler - Black Earth, WI, August 10, 2002

We'll go to Brian Forney for the call...

We all thought the course was nice with a few very small hills, accurate mile markers and time readers, and one water stop. The temps were very reasonable as well. This years race was won by a 16 year old male in around 27:30.

That's a fast 16 year old.

Brian Forney: 30:07
Randy Wildman: 31:00
Sean Kelly: 31:09
Scott Segal: 31:36
Tom Arneson: 99:99

Evidently Tom decided to run the course three times before crossing the line.

Finally, check out those socks:

Marathon Distance Runs

The Saturday runs are getting longer. The distances still range from 8 to 20, but there are more and more runners pushing the 20 mile mark as fall marathon season approaches. The group has grown to a good size but could definitely use more support. Remember, free bagels are readily available at the terrace for post-run munching. The Saturday run starts at 7:30 am and bagels are available from just before 10 am.

Scott Segal, PhD

Congratulations to Dr. Scott Segal. He recently completed the defense of his PhD thesis, entitled Regulated Nuclear Export of tra-2 mRNA in Caenorhabditis elegans Sex Determination. What?, you ask? The doc, realizing not all of us understand the title, graciously provided an abstract (available upon request).

The UWRC newscrew was on the scene at his defense, and captured the following image. Evidently Dr. Segal was going for the visual defense:

Scott the Worm
Scott as a Caenorhabditis elegans. Not too elegant ???
