Race results

Janesville Half-Marathon, September 7, 2002

Scott Segal, Tony Steeno, Tom Arneson, and Farrell Malone traveled to Janesville for this half-marathon run mostly on highways outside of Janesville. (indeed other runners came along but their whereabouts are unknown at this time) The race turned into a training run for Tom and Scott as they were faced with injuries and tapering for future races, respectively. (see Scott's Phili half results below). Tom's training effort was good enough for 3rd in the 10K. Says Tom: All the fast people were in the half. Tony and Farrell ran together until the last 20 yards, where Tony decided to steal the race (and the age group award). Congrats to all.

10K
Tom Arneson: 37:04 (2nd AgeGroup, 3rd Overall)

Half-Marathon
Tony Steeno: 1:25:32 (3rd in Age Group)
Farrell malone: 1:25:36 (NOT 3rd in Age Group)
Scott Segal: dq'ed

Finally, what a nice group:

Cheesehead Half-Marathon - "Dairy Farming Community," WI, September 14, 2002

The Wildman struck again this weekend as he completed the Cheesehead Half-Marathon. While the races exact location remains a mystery, it is rumored to be an hour or so north of Madison. Randy reports:

I wanted to see how long I could maintain 80-minute pace, about 6:10 min. miles. Lasted 4 miles with ease. Was dead the rest of the way. Total time 90:25, and I was lucky to get that. Managed third in my age group, Beautiful wood-carved plaque.

Randy Wildman: 1:30:25

Congrats to the WiLdMaN for 3rd in his age group.

Philadelphia Distance Run - Philadelphia, PA September 15, 2002

Hot off the press: Scott Segal completed the Philadelphia Distance Run (a half-marathon, one of the largest in the country) this morning. The race sports an all-star field, as it is well placed for fall marathon training. Scott was toughing it out against some of the best in the world...

Ironman Wisconsin, September 15, 2002

Ok, so we may not have club members in Ironman Wisconsin (or do we??), but this race is too big to leave out. Try swimming 2.4 miles, biking 112, then running a marathon (26.2 miles). Don't be surprised to see fellow club members take a shot next year (this is the inaugaral year of Ironman Wisconsin). Clubmembers were on hand at the marathon course to help out--check the pics in the news below

A quick summary of the winners:

Club news

Kick-off Week is Underway

All signs point to a very successful kick-off week on the part of the UWRC. There has been a great turnout at all club runs and events scheduled for these first few official weeks back in school. The events aren't over yet...be sure to join the club at the Wednesday Night Track Workout scheduled for 6pm at the McClimon Track on the UW campus. See you there!!

Marathon Distance Runs

There are few Saturday "distance" runs remaining. Fall marathon season is here. This Saturday there about 15 people- perhaps due to the later start time, now 8:30am. Later start time, but still free bagels. Come join us for the last couple longer runs (several will be passing 20 miles next Saturday). From mid-October on the Saturday run will rejoin the group of the other, more sane, distanced club runs.

Upcoming races

UWRC FALL MARATHON ROUND-UP
Twin Cities Marathon Minneapolis (and St. Paul) Minnesota, September 29, 2002.

Brian Forney will be heading up to Minnesoooota for this race. Wish him luck as he completes his last few training runs with the club.

Milwaukee Marathon Milwaukee, WI, October 6, 2002.

Tom Arneson and Matt Jarosz are going to be participating in the Milwaukee marathon. It is likely that Tom will "just try to break 5 hours" (read: 3 hours or less). Find him after the race and see if he was able to do it.

Chicago Marathon Chicago, IL, October 13, 2002.

Many club members (too many to list without leaving some out) will be in Chicago for this flat and fast dash to 26.2. A record-setting field of elites, including the men's and women's world-record holders will be on hand for this race.

New York City Marathon New York City, NY, November 3,2002.

Scott Segal and Joel Summers are lucky enough to have entries in the Big Apple's version of the marathon distance--widely acclaimed as one of if not the best marathons in the country. These guys have a while yet before their race, and thus will be running the anchor leg of the UWRC's fall marathons.
