Race results

Chicago Marathon, October 13, 2002

UWRC runners made up a full 0.00017% of the runners at the Chicago Marathon on October 13, 2002.  A chilly start helped, while a stiff headwind in the last 3 miles hurt big time.  Also notable is Paula Radcliffe's world record of 2:17 and change.  Club runners involved:

Chicago Marathon:
Brennan Hughey: 3:57:18
Eric Frome:  2:49:04
Farrell Malone: 2:58:24
Dan Nagle: 3:25:11
Scott Segal: 3:23:18

If you are left out, its because you didn't tell us you were there.

We did a little carbo loading beforehand...odd pic on the wall there...

Scott
Clockwise from right: Brian, Megan, Scott, and Stacy, and Farrell.

Bucky's Race for Rehab, Thursday, October 17, 2002

The club had several runners in this smaller weekday race starting near the Nat and run mostly on the Lakeshore path.  Not sure who won overall, but those in the club ran pretty well:

 Bucky's Race for Rehab 5K:
Luke Hoeppner: 17:20 (1st in Age Group, 6th Overall)
 Steve Klehfoth: 17:36 (8th)
We are told that Tony Steeno and Matt Jarosz also ran this race, but their times are classified...sorry folks.

Race Judicata 3ish-K- October 26, 2002.

This race was advertised as a 5k, and turned out to be "somewhere in the 3.5k range."  No one was really sure that there was a course to speak of, and those out front (a good number of which were club members) just kind of made their way around U-bay fields, headed back to the Nat, and called it a race.  Good post race food though.  There was a long list of club participants, but given the nature of the race it has been omitted.  The winner won in some ridiculous time...12 mins. and something.  Its not clear if there was a winner to the costume contest, but as far as we're concerned it should have been Steve Klehfoth, who looked a bit too much like a Prefontaine with the same first name.

MATC Turkey Trot- November 2, 2002.

This from the MATC Turkey Trot:

5 mile:
Stephanie Dantinne: 41:48
Travis Gordon: 44:26
Luke Hoeppner: 31:49 (15th)
Tony Steeno: 31:04 (11th)

5k:
Elizabeth Hack: 22:15
Matt Haller: 20:38
Sean Kelly: 18:44
Steve Klehfoth: 18:09 (5th)
Michelle Roberts: 24:42

New York City Marathon, November 3, 2002

While we previously had several runners on tap for this very popular (perhaps most popular) fall marathon, it turns out the club's sole representative was Joel Sommers.  This is ok, because Joel ran very very very fast.  Says Joel of his race:

"NYC is my new favorite race. forget the weather (cold and windy), the four hour wait on Staten Island (I was there at 6:50 for an 11:10 start), the hour-long wait to get coffee on Staten Island (don't even ask me about the bagel line), the hour and a half wait to get into the expo just to get my bib, the obstacle course of discarded clothing and food at the start (and other "stuff" - only runners would believe me), and the hills (bridges, really, but big ones) - it's still my new favorite.

NYC Marathon:
Joel Sommers: 2:53:37 (320 overall out of 32000) !

Way to go Joel.

Saturday Run Still Around Despite Colder Temps

The talk of the latest Saturday run centered around the 50 degree temps accompanying those usually huddled in front of the union on Saturdays.  We can't promise temps in the 50's for the future, but we do promise the run is on every Saturday from 8:30am at 800 Langdon St.  You also won't find many people venturing past the 8-10 mile mark, but everyone is welcome to join us.

Fall 15K A Big Success

The club's annual Fall 15k drew a record-setting 150+ runners to Warner Park on October 20.   This marks the second year in a row that no runner has gone off course and no runner has failed to finish due to aforementioned detours.  The race this year was won by Chad Krofta in a time of 51:28.  The women's race was won by Laura Clark-Taylor in a time of 61:06.  Check out the results here.

From Doc Segal in Sunny AZ

Scott Segal has made his move to Arizona, and has resumed radio contact.  This from Scott:

Life is quite nice in the sunny Southwest. It's nice and warm here, and I was thinking of all of you, wearing your winter coats, when I was biking in today. When I haven't been working, I've been able to be outside. Last weekend, we were able to get out and hike in the mountains. On the outskirts of town, the nature is really a site to see. Other than that, I've been getting set up in the new apartment, and I've been in lab, trying to learn enough to get a project up and going. The reading is certainly keeping me busy.

Mob Run...what?

We were wondering how all these club races could have "record numbers" entered and how it could be that we actually need two hands sometimes to count the number of runners present for the Saturday runs. It turns out there is a good explanation. For more on this, we go to Travis Gordon, fresh off probation for "igniting road flares in residence halls:"

Showing the pride, enthusiasm and lack of inhibitions that make the UWRC strong, several members of the club joined together for another successful MOB RUN in September. Some were freshmen, some were graduate students, but they all united for one common goal: to spread the word of the UW Running Club.
The idea behind the Mob Run is simple; get a large group of runners together, give them something to pass out, and then run around campus "promoting" the club. The first club Mob Run was spearheaded by former member Evan Shukan, who is now in Washington DC. It was a successful event, with a highlight coming when we presented the Chancellor with a UWRC Valentine. That was also when I singed my club sweatshirt from the flares I was carrying.
This year we stormed the dorms, carrying candy and fliers through the Lakeshore area, Chadbourne and the Southeast Dorms. The group broke apart several times during the run, but came together at the end near the SERF. We entered the SERF, and without showing our IDs (!), we forged our way to the upstairs track and littered the track and aerobic facilities below with fliers. By then, the group was tired, out of candy and ready to disband.
We look forward to carrying the momentum of this run into next semester's MOB RUN. Hope to see you out there, wearing blaze orange, goggles or nothing at all.
